Our History

Based in the Isle of Axholme near Doncaster in South Yorkshire. Jones Engineering was established in 1987 by Stephen and Margaret Jones. Stephen Jones started out at a local Massey Ferguson dealer (A Burrell & Sons Haxey) as an apprentice engineer in 1965. Before moving on in 1976 and starting out on his own, carrying out machine repairs for the local farmers, being known as Stephen Jones Agricultural engineers. It wasn’t long before the company expanded, moving sites, and taking on various tractor dealerships.

In 1992 they decided to focus on making their own machines, rather than selling others companies. This passion had been steadily growing throughout the 80s, starting with ‘DJS’ trailers. Before moving on to building potato toppers, followed by carrot toppers. The toppers were mostly front mounted, which at the time was a relatively new concept. Shortly followed by Cappers/Crowners, quickly becoming the market leader in the field. Expanding from root crop machinery during the 90s they started producing tractor front linkage, brushes, bag lifters and sugarbeet cleaner loaders

In 1994 the design of the Triple bedformer put Jones Engineering on the map. It proved to be the right machine at the right time, as one of the first on the market that only required 110hp to work the machine. The triple bedformer was awarded a RASE Silver medal in 2002.

Towards the end of the 1990s they further expanded their range with poly layers, poly removers, rubber flipper toppers, onion toppers, windrowers and Irrigators.

Following the success of converting the single bedformer into a triple machine, they designed a triple onion topper in 1999, a triple windrower in 2001 and a triple potato planter in 2003. In the early 2000s they designed a trailed harvester.

A lot of the products have been driven by customer demands and specifications, which is still the case today, with most recently designing and manufacturing a bespoke self propelled tree harvester for a customer.

Today Jones engineering employs 30 people with Stephen and Margaret still at the core. Jones Engineering produce 65 different machines specialising in vegetable machines and land preparation. The Jones product has been exported to 34 countries around the world, including: New Zealand, Argentina, Mongolia and many more.
